Yeah I agree Barney, just giving my own superficial response to Martino. Forum blather. Whatever works for you works for you. I get quickly irritated by just about any strong "this method is best" opinion. Fact is no-one really knows how best to learn to play jazz, which is why you continually see guys who are great players and good teachers fighting like ferrets in a sack about the merits of different teaching methods. You'd think this lack of consensus would lead to open minds and healthy scepticism but the opposite often seems to be true. Where little can be proved little can be disproved and you get a breeding ground for hard line dogmatists and single issue fanatics. Reading notation is absolutely essential/irrelevant. Theory is necessary/a pointless distraction. CST is a useful tool/has ruined jazz. Transcribing is inefficient and unneccessary/the only way jazz can be learned. Ad infinitum.
