Should add that I used to use a Shure SM58, but we found the Sennhieser 8xx series is seemingly much more resistant to feedback.
I think it's fair to say most people don't get a chance to try different mics so just buy on recommendations. I got my first SM58 cos it was recommended by the singer of the first serious band I joined. He got his first 58 cos the local music shop told him it was what they used on Top of the Pops ...... which was kinda funny in the eighties because nobody sang live on TOTP's back then anyway. In the eighties and nineties everybody used Shure dynamics for everything on the local pub \ club scene live scene
Now I see a lot of Senn mics for vocals and a lot of Audix mic's for drums and guitars
