Which Volume Pot?

Help.

I've forgotten whether I need a linear or logarithmic cts pot for my volume control.

Also if I leave the whole length of wire on new Dimarzio humbuckers will it have any effect on tone/output? Or if I use a 500k+ pot will this counteract any resistance in the wiring?

Audio/ log taper is best for volume controls, our ears don't really like the sweep on linear ones for volume work.

The wiring should be fine as is, I wouldn't worry too much. If it was a few miles of it then yes but there shouldn't be too much excess if it's a pickup. If you sell on the HB at a later date as well then it might help get a better deal for it if you haven't cut the wire too much.

I find that linear is better if you don't use much gain, but if you like gain then log pots "clean up" better when you turn them down.

Exactly.

The length of wire makes little or no difference to the tone - the resistance is a few ohms at the absolute outside (most likely less) compared to hundreds of thousands of ohms for the pot and the amp's input impedance, so it's irrelevant - but there may be a *tiny* (I mean really really tiny!) effect from the extra capacitance of a thin shielded cable. I prefer to cut them 'sensibly short' - neat, but not so short they can't be repaired or reconnected easily at a later date. If you think you might want to put the pickup in another guitar or sell it, leave it long.
