Anyone know how much the new cost of the 5:50 2x12 was?
From memory theyre retailing at £1550
Id have that one but Ive just bought a 2x12 ext cab for mine...
I have been emailing the seller, trying to get a deal outside of ebay for a small reduction in price....My only concern is will the amp do the stuff I need it to? I could probably play everything I need to play with a Fender Twin, theres one being sold loacally that i can pick up after a 5 minute drive, in mint condition for £700.00 im sure it will cope with the punk covers we do, but I like the thought of the Boogie and the lower wattage settings for home use!!!! I have never owned an amp other than a Vox or a Marshall so this is all alien territory to me.
pm me if you want ive yet to find anything mine cant actually do (other than modern metal but then I dont play that!). Ive even sold all my pedals other than my wah because of it too...
The thing is... why buy an Express when you can have a Mark IV??? =/
I am pretty talentless on the guitar, my band plays probably some of the simplest covers out there:
Buzzcocks-Ramones-the Jam-Stranglers-Sex Pistols-Damned-Clash-Stooges,
I sing at the same time, The need for "Beautiful Cleans" and other great tones are pretty lost on me, I just want a top quality amp that I will never need to change,Looking back at all my favourite bands down the years and the equipment they have used has obviously influenced my decision:
Steve Jones played through a Twin for the early Pistols stuff so this would be a great choice,
Mick Jones played through a Boogie from the second album onwards - this would be my ideal choice from reading reviews as it apparently sounds like any amp with a bit of twiddling.
I am classic "all the gear and no idea", but have a surplus of cash that I wont have in the future so want the best amp I can buy now.
The Mark IV is only putting me off with Weight and slightly more than I can really afford, soudns great at £1000 but I live at the other side of the country, so can't get to pick it up.
Is there anything negative about the 5:50 that leads you to say go for the MarkIV in place of it, or is it just regarded a better amp historically?
a friend of mine with a mark iv used to say the same thing until he played through my 5:50. Tbh theyre quite similar the 5:50 has better cleans and we decided slightly more clarity, the mark iv was heavier (in sound) and had more distortion, but thats not to say the express cant do distortion..... Both really good amps
Mark IV is simply one of the Grail amps.
You've got your Plexi's, your JCM800s, your Twins, and your Marks.
Mark Iv just happens to be the one (along with the IIC+, but the IV has more to offer). They may take getting used to, but you'll get there. There's a lot of knobs you see, and power amps settings (Which decide what wattage you're playing at... it's all in the downloadable manual).
I'd get the IV, and if you don't like it (The lead channel is sublime, Rhythm 2 channel is AMAZING when turned up, Rolling Stones to AC/DC if you want it to be) sell it and try an Express... but don't pay basically the same for an Express over the IV! :D
Thanks for the replies lads....I have no logic to my decision only the fact that the Mark IV will cost me £1000 and I can hopefully negotiate the Express for £800, it's a fair wedge to me, I'm not in a position to ever make money from my playing, it is solely 3 old mates meeting up to make a racket playing the crap we used to see live in the 70's and 80's, I just feel that the Express might just be enough.
I understand the Grail reference, I have played guitar for years off and on switching from bass to lead, And always knew my onions, but having only gotten back into the game in the last 8 months I am lost in a sea of newness!!!! I was pretty sure I wanted a Blackstar Artisan a week ago, and also and Orange Rocker, but now my mind is a mess with choice. Whatever I decide I dont want to regret.
At the age of 42 I dont want to be smashing my back up lugging huge lumps of amp around. but know I can't get by with something cheap.
