Default Something for a vocalist to slap?

Grrreatings gentlemen of the percussive muso-rhythmic instermental devices.

Back at uni a joined a Jazz Socity and I love the weekly get-togethers. In the group I'd be branded a singer but I've put some though into getting some sort of small hand-drum to politly tap on while others are expressing themselves vocally.

I love experimenting with poly rhythm and odd rhythmic phrasing, I can hadle them well but I fall apart even in simply rhythms when I need to do several things at once (ie play a full drum kit) and to cut a long story medium-lenght, I wonder if you chaps come spot me with something suitable. something not to pricey would be welcome ( I an a student after all).

    thank you.

I was going to wittily riposte "The Drummer", but thought better of it

Hmmm how about some Congas or a Cajon ?

    Great minds, etc.

    I rather like this:

We've come a long way from the Prime Minister's exploding cake. Or have we?

well that sounds wonderful, but I'm afraid I don't know what cajongas are.

oh and In case your wondering I'm not the type of musicain who looks down on drummers or have the opinion that anyone can do it because "they don't even need to play a melody". I believe there are things you can do with perc that are impossible with all other types of instrument. (well if I didn't i wouldn't be looking to learn)

Me neither - I've tried drumming and I just can't do it. A good drummer makes a huge contribution to a musical endeavour.
