Default seemed a good idea at the time

when they booked us last July we were like: yeah sure it'll be great....

I've got my first ever outdoor gig on Sunday ...... yep this Sunday ...... outside ..... in January

How f**king cold is it going to be? I might post a report on how it went next week, depends how many fingers I've got left after the frost bite
And its a charity fund raiser so we don't get paid either.

Any advice for outdoor gigs, sound setting tips, PA / amp positioning etc?

Rent one of those big industrial blowers and make it part of the act ... oh yes, and turn the amps up to be heard above it. lol

You will require approximately three times as much PA power as you would normally, as the sound's dispersing in all directions, you will probably need more reverb and maybe a bit more treble than you're used to as nothing's being reflected back at you. Definitely get your amp up off the stage, you'll need all the projection you can get.

And long trenchcoats look cool on guitarists, get one. Although a trenchcoat with fingerless gloves may make you look like a hobo.

Whilst true in 1985 if you were Andy Taylor or someone, I don't think this applies anymore.

    At all.

    Really.

    Just don't!

If ever there was a reason for me to get fingerless gloves then that is it!

Make sure that your amp doesn't get wet from rain or condensation. I once had a spectacular amp failure at a garden party. We set up and soundchecked around 6.00. By the time we got on stage the dew had settled. It wasn't really noticeable, except on the cold metal inside the amp.

Also you gotta watch out for the cold fucking up your guitar's tuning. Don't tune a while before the gig, then play and expect it to still be in tune. Make sure you tune right before you start playing too. That's the worst thing I ever had with playing outside.
