    Question (Electric) Richard Thompson suggestions?

Richard Thompson ( hereafter known as Dickie) is one of those musicians that I will watch if he comes on tv, listen to on the radio and, err, that kind of thing but not everything really works for me. Today I saw him on tv doing Shoot Out The Lights ( think that's right)on a custom tele and it was fairly raw ( in a controlled kind of way) and I really liked it. Yet I've sat through clips of him on acoustic that I find dull indeed.

So, top few suggestions of Dickie on electric anybody?

That's from his duo days with his then wife Linda. His solo stuff has generally been a mix of acoustic and electric. Mock Tudor has some great electric moments, as does the classic Rumour and Sigh album and Mirror Blue.

Live he tends to stretch things out and play more so the album versions might be a bit different to what you saw.

If let's say hyperphetically you wanted some audio files of something completely unrelated then drop me a PM...

Ah ok. It's "I feel so good" from the Rumour and Sigh album (a live version from a TV show). Great song IMHO...and he's not wearing his berret so he looks bit like the dungeon master from the D&G carton (anyone remember that?)

If I get a chance I'll have a good old look through the CDs at home and suggest some tracks. They'll be some real gems spread over most of his albums, but maybe some of the dreary stuff you want to avoid as well.

However if you've not heard it look for "Vincent Black Lightning 1952"...all acoustic but utterly amazing.

I have heard it before but is quite magnificent ( for an acoustic track!).

Nice one, I hadn't seen that clip of 'shoot out the lights' before. Cracking stuff, I thought it'd be a much older clip.

That was from his last album with Linda (the break-up album really). Their first together was 'I want to see the bright lights tonight' so the title tracks book-end that era really well.

Interesting... I like his acoustic playing, his songwriting and even his voice (which I know is an acquired taste to some people) but I find his electric guitar playing drives me to distraction - both what he plays and the tone, particularly on a Strat... although that Tele is clearly fitted with a middle pickup as well. It's so bad it stops me enjoying the songs.

This is strictly a personal-taste thing, and I know many people have similar issues with some other singers' voices or playing as well.

Mock Tudor or the capitol era compilation are a good start I think. He's an awesome songwriter.
