    Default kick/bass synergy

I don't if that's the right way to ask this but...

I was working on something the other day and got a bass note hitting the same time as the kick and it really helped beef up the kick?

How's it doing that? I thought bass got in the way of kicks

No mate, frequenices, it's all it is. Bass n kick can be fine. Don't listen to people who 'tell' you how to write or act a peice of music.

So is this a case of matching the frequencies or complimenting them? i.e. having the bass a third/fifth up from the tone of the kick or vice versa

I have no idea, I haven't heard it. That would only apply though if both sounds remained static and bass usually has more than one note in a riff.

Some good advice when dealing with bass elements is to ensure you are monitoring around 80 dBSPL for some of the time so you get a balanced picture across the spectrum ( a la Fletcher Munson curves). Also side chaining the bass with the kick for just as little as 1-2dB can help if it is not quite working, only takes 1 min to set up when you know how your DAW works with this. If the kick and specific bass note are largely in phase then you will get an increase in volume however it might mean the notes that are not at the same pitch as your kick will be weaker and it may or may not work musically.

    cheers
