    Default Alesis SR-16

My Alesis SR-16 started playing silly buggers last night. It refused to stop playing when the device sending it MIDI clock was halted. Then it started putting strange characters on the display. Power cycled. The bastard wiped its entire user memory. All the presets are still there, but the user patterns and songs are all gone. 4 years' work lost

This happened after I'd made a copy of a very long song, and then edited the copy. Is this a known software bug and is there a fix?

Maybe internal battery has started to go, Mine went years ago and I threw the thing away.

    Hmmmm ...
someone else suggested the battery might be knacked.

Is it a user-replaceable part, is it worth trying to open the machine up to replace it?

Perhaps Alesis could fix it if I sent it to them but if I can fix it myslef it would save hassle.

    Got one myself.

+1 on the internal battery issue. Got to change them occasionally! Same issue with my boss SE70s!

Totally user replaceable! Just get a screwdriver and go for it

Do you know I've had my SE-70 since 1991 (I think - whenever they first came out, anyway...) - and I've *never changed the battery* . Last time I used it (last week I think) it was still working fine.

I know I really should. But to be honest I hardly use it now (apart from as a tuner in my workshop), and I wouldn't cry if I lost the very few remaining user programmes I've got in it that I still use sometimes. I could easily recreate them anyway, I'm extremely familiar with the editing having used it continuously as my main source of sounds all through the 90s.

I have no idea why the battery has lasted so long - that's over 20 years.

Sorry for the hijack, but +2 on the battery for the SR-16. I had one too. It's unfortunate you didn't back up the user patterns though, they're gone for good.

    Nik, ICBM - thank you!

I never backed anything up because backing up digital data on an audio cassette always struck me as write-only memory.
