Default Modeller / ? for silent recording - recommend me something?

Right, I have a POD 2.0 that I'm struggling to get a sound I like out of (basically trying the impossible - the fat bluesy edge of breakup sound out of a modeller ) so wondering if there's a unit that is better suited at modest outlay?

I need it to have a line out as I'm feeding it in to the mic/line jack in on my laptop - I tried going in to my laptop via USB but I think my cheapo laptop just isn't up to it - any audio fed in via USB starts ok then turns in to nasty metallic/digital/delayed distortion after a couple of minutes, so USB not a requirement, and anything USB only is out.

Vox Tonelab? Something else? FX are not important, nor is sparkly clean or bewtalz. Ta.
    Red ones are better.

There's a pod HD300 in the classifieds for £150 which might be worth considering, balanced out and headphones so you could monitor directly without worrying about latency from the laptop

A bit more than I'm looking to spend, but ta.
btw I need to monitor from laptop as the backing tracks are on there - I don't get any latency going in that way, it's just USB that's crap on it.

Hook the POD 2 up to your computer via MIDI and use the editing software to reach the hidden functions. You can get a great sound out of a POD 2.

The nasty sound you're discribing could be the driver, try unplugging the Pod and reconnecting it. Sometimes have this problem myself (tascam interface in fairly powerfull laptop )and it seems to fix it. Possible check for updates or reinstalling it

The USB device is a Zoom recorder which can act as a USB interface - have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers.
To be honest my laptop caused all kinds of issues with my old Jamvox (which I had to sell as a result) via USB too - I think it's the computer. (ironically my older, 'crapper' work laptop was fine, only when they upgraded me did it go down the toilet lol)

It might work better going the other way, PC Line Out > Pod/Whatever Line In > Headphones?
