It all works fine now, I just want a nicer sound source for the guitar tone, I was just explaining why I'd not want to use a USB device is all

Fretwired I'll look in to that tonight - I've got a USB-Midi interface somewhere which should work fine as midi isn't exactly bandwidth intensive

I use the bass version of these:

Valve preamp with EQ and DI.

The bass one is brilliant, I imagine the guitar one is good too.

The Vox Tonelab uses the same models, controls, etc as the VT series of modelling amps. On my VT, some of the amp models are designed to be more responsive- like a real tube amp. The three models in the US Blues section can get a pretty darn good-sounding blues crunch. I've been looking for that sound, too! You know, that "pushed" sounding clean that rattles the snare drum?

I'd say go and take one for a test drive, and see if it gets the sound you're looking for. So far, the us blues and the 2x12 sections are getting the most use in my amp. The VT amps do switch off the main speaker when phones are plugged in. The headphone jack also doubles as a speaker emulated output.

Personally, I have found the UX2 and Pod Farms to be amazing. Ive recorded with it and people have been very nice about the tones Ive had out of it. Id go for a UX2 as you can plug 2 mics in and have both of them going at the same time. Also, you dont HAVE to use the Pod Farms at all, but as a bit of kit, headphone with volume knob on the top of it, monitors out, meters and XLR inputs its fantastic. Only thing it doesnt have is midi..

I had a UX2 years ago, and a Guitarport before that, then a Jamvox - I really liked them all, but as I say, USB audio is out (even if you take a line out from a UX2 the audio gets to it from the PC over USB)

How about that Hughes & Kettner DI box thing? IIRC that has a dummy load and I've read good reviews.

Failing that, I briefly had a go on a Sansamp GT2 a while back and was hugely impressed with the direct-to-disk sounds.

I have a Tonelab ST on the way - I'll see if its sounds are any sweeter...
