It's the same as the difference between a compressor and a limiter, except the other way round.
The expander is sort of a “reverse compressor” that increases the difference between loud sounds and soft sounds by lowering the volume of soft sounds even further. When set up to completely silence incoming signals below a certain threshold, the expander is called a gate.

On this forum, I did get a bit of an abrupt answer to a question I posed about the iPad and its ability to run Facebook games (it's for the missus, honestly). Hoping to get the benefit of someones actual experience, one reply was a bit of a veiled JFGI suggestion; however, I had already Googled it, and found the results to be somewhat contradictory. I have been told no, but there was a page saying you can with x,y, and z. What I was hoping for was a bit of feedback someone who has been, there rather than someone getting pissy because they can use a search engine.
