I'd +1 the Peavey Millennium and Cirrus series. I've got a Millennium and I couldn't be happier.

A mate in my band has a schecter 5 string and its very nice. EMG-HZ pickups in it, and it sounds great too. Most impressive actually.

It won't be gigged just played at home and used for home recording.

If you can give me some ideas then I can start getting out there and trying them out.

    Thanks.
Are you going to be sticking with 4 strings, or do you want to expand your range? My mate Steve has a Warwick 5-string that sounds, to my muffled ears, like a Peavey. His is a Vampyre, which is admittedly a bit above your price range, but the Streamer is a slightly uglier version for about £230. I personally love my Fender Jazz Bass, which I've just rescued from storage in my wardrobe after the guy I was keeping it for says he's not coming back (yay). They're suprisingly versatile, and work very well for metal. They can be as cheap as £130 if you look around a bit. Good luck with finding your ideal
