Default New track - your production thoughts?

    Hey guys.

Just finished building out my (a-hem) home studio and this is the first track from it - would be grateful for your input, mostly on the production side but all comments welcome.

Vocals are temporary until me mate is free!

And if you really feel like it, any comments on the other tracks are welcome too!

    /edit

I've uploaded a new version thats been tweaked etc - your thoughts would be most appreciated. Its the v2 version on the page. I know that the player on the site has mp3-a-fied it a little, which is annoying, but I think this sounds better than the original...

    Ta!

I actually like your vocals. They are a bit Thom Yorke - sure they are a little out of tune here and there, but easily rectified with a bit of time and they are characterful. I'd do the vocals yourself if I were you.

As for everything else, I like the bell-like part and the drums are fine (if a little monotonous by the time you get to the breakdown).

I like the string pads, but the little descending string line is a bit MIDI cheesy.

The guitars are OK ... but a little bit ... er ... basic. The double tracking works well though. Perhaps a bit more of a wet treatment may help (the left channel at least).

On the whole, a track with plenty of potential. Stick with it.
Guitars, effects, a computer, Logic Pro, effects, some more effects ... oh and some effects.

Just listened to this, I agree with the Thom Yorke comment on vox! Sounding pretty good to me, though the guitars are perhaps a bit dry, but played in time! Anyway, I enjoyed it

    Cheers guys, most appreciated!

Re drums, I know what you mean. I never know how to fill out drum bits - I normally go for more acoustic drum sounds so this is a bit of a departure for me. Only thing I thought of were the occassional glitching you might be able to hear.

Also the descending strings I agree with - I need to find a slightly more convicing Rhodes plugin for that bit (cos I want that to lead the lead).

Guitars I have no idea what to do with - maybe a slight ting of reverb would help?

Many thanks for your comments - all appreciated!

Very good song, it's got a good hook right from the start. I hate the drums, oddly the guitar sits ok for me and sounds fine...

Great song, if a little Fake Plastic Trees in places.

I reckon the guitar does need a little work - little things like mixing it a little brighter*, arpeggiating the chords on the pre-chorus (0:57), dropping, or lowering, it when the MIDI strings come in, maybe - just ideas.

    *how about a 12-string?

12 string?? I wouldn't know where to start on one of them! First time I've recorded with the acoustic plugged in. You think that recording both plugged in and miked up then mixed might help with the brightness maybe?

The Radiohead comments I'm finding a difficult to get used to (as one of my mates especially will understand...) - never had that comparison before!

But appreciating the feedback guys - keep em coming!

Another way of getting the same effect is to double the part, but play different fingerings of the chords (using a capo if you want to get lots of jangly open strings).

For instance... you could have one guitar playing the old vanilla open C shape, and on the other, capo at the 10th fret and play an open D shape.

Another way, replace the E, A and D strings (the three thickest strings) with the G, B and E strings (from another set of strings) and tune them to E A and D. Then double the guitar, that'll also give a twelve string effect too
