Default "Artist Development" and meeting with Record company types

After an eventful few weeks we have been invited down to our nations capital to discuss "artist development". TBH our band of hobbyists have absolutely no idea what this is, what to be wary of etc, etc, etc.

Anyone any experience or words of wisdom / warning?

    Cheers

    Arrive sober and on time.

Don't sign anything until you've had a lawyer read it.

Let them talk and listen hard.

When they've said their bit take a break to discuss it between yourselves, and during this discussion everyone must be honest about how they feel.

Don't believe your or their advertising!

It could mean anything, but probably just means they think you show promise and want to talk to you.

The most important thing is don't sign anything without showing it to a lawyer.

A lot of people sign bands to punitive management deals in the hope they will have to be bought out for vast sums if the band get signed.

Sounds like a cross between a job interview and a meeting with HR.

In other words, full of hope but in reality rather unpleasant

Haha. I'd pretty much taken it to mean all of the above. I wont be giving up the day job just yet!

If that means what it did when I was in that position it'll be they basically give you a loan (and exclusivity) to see where you get to and whether it's worth giving you an actual deal. You'll be in debt to them essentially.
