Default Quick Tube Screamer "vs" Bad Monkey question..

With the drive cranked (and volumes set to unity i suppose) do they have the same amount of dirt available? Or does one have more than the other?

Just asking because i'm currently looking at buying a Tube Screamer and i've got a Bad Monkey (on loan from a friend) and while it's nice, i'd prefer a little more dirt from it.

I've never AB'd these but I'd suspect not. However, I think we might be missing the point with these pedals, which are at their best when pushing a valve amp over the edge.

Setting the vol to unity and using the clipping from the unit as the only dirt-source might not be getting the best out of them.

    What amp are you using?

Save your money and get a Joyo Vintage Drive. For £29 this is a great Tubescreamer clone. If you want more drive get the Joyo Ultimate Drive also £29, better still buy both and run the Vintage into the Ultimate for a great lead sound even with a clean amp.

As has been said above, the Tubescreamer - and the numerous clones out there (how many green OD pedals does one world need?!) - isn't going to give you oodles of gain. It works best when driving an already crunchy amp over into more OD.

If it's a fatter, thicker, more sustainy sound you're after, it's not a TS

I found an OCD clone to do exactly what you're after, although I was after more dirt than a Boss OD-1, not a Tubescreamer.

It also has a fuller frequency response, that mid-hump/bass-cut thing is fine for the "pushing an amp further" thing described above, but sounds weedy if you're getting all your overdrive from a pedal.

I'm not one for pushing an amp into overdrive as i like all my distortion at my feet (just keeps things consistant, or helps to at least).
Amp wise i've got a Custom Vibrolux-Reverb (pending Moyer mods) bought for it's clean tone.
Not really after a fatter, thicker, more sustainy sound either, thats what the big muff is for haha.

Just after one for a dirty mid humped thing, don't need a ton of gain but more than the Bad Monkey would be nice, but not necessary.

Reason i wasn't really asking about alternatives was: THIS (which i just won).

For me, the primary reason to get a Bad Monkey over a standard TS-alike is to use the bass control - you can get a properly dirty, bottom-heavy drive out of your amp without changing channels. With a TS pedal, you've got mid-hump or nothing, depending on whether it's turned on or off

    I agree with that !
The T.S family and clones are designed to push and shape the tube preamp stage of an amp not to add lots of distortion . The bad monkey is pretty good doing that pluss as stated it has seperate bass treble controls for more control .
There are loads of distortion pedals that take things up a slight notch from a T.S one of my favs is the Turbo Overdrive by Boss , that one has two settings one obviously is turbo mode .

They were designed to sound like an overdriven tube amp, not to push one. It's in the sales literature link and the manuals link

I've got an OD-2 and OD-2r already. The turbo mode is amazing with lower gain but once you start turning it up past 10 o'clock it gets way too bassy for what i want.

What things are designed for and what they are used for is not always the same.

Some of the best noises ever made were made by people using things wrongly.
