I generally remove any rubber pads, then rub down with Lakeland's Sticky Stuff remover (basically scented naptha) to get rid of any sticky residue. Then use Heavy Duty Velcro. I've never had this stuff fall off a pedal when on a board, but peels off easily if you're careful- I've never had it take paint off

If you have a woman in your life or if your into cross-dressing there is a much easier say to get rid of the residue and a lot of the gunk left behind...... nail varnish remover.

The solution actually gives me really bad headaches the instant I smell it so my Mrs has removed the velcro and junk from loads of pedals for me with varnish remover and cotton wool and left no discernible marking even on a bare metal pedal... she even cleaned a whole PedalTrain2 that was mummified in velcro.

I always use lighter fluid , doesn't damage the paint and works a treat

Yeah, velcro is a good thing.. unless it's a vintage (valuable) pedal...

Recently I have issues velcro-ing my blackstar pedal, bit of super glue sorted that out ...

That's the stuff! Taken it off a few pedals with no bother at all. Holds like a fuckingrock though!
