I think whats also worth using is a drum machine for practice, listen for the snare and try and anticipate it to play infront and try and play at the end of snare hit.
I used this as an excercise where I proved to people that you can make a song "appear" faster or slow with a drum machine, depending on how you play to it.
Also by learning this, your drummers timing often improves as you learn how to control him, especially when playing bass, less so with guitar. Often a drummer will speed up or slow down to Bassists playing, not because they can`t keep time.
try standing right next to the drummers snare and lock into that....i always prefer that side for that reason, you can really lock into whats going on...
