    Default Breakdown Cover

My last car insurance policy had free breakdown cover.

I've just switched to a different provider who are loads cheaper, but want about £90 extra for decent breakdown cover so I'm thinking of getting separate cover just for breakdown as even standard AA is £77 and I'm sure I can get it cheaper than that.

So who is cheap, but decent?

I normally play the AA and RAC off against each other.

It's nearly always cheaper to buy it separately from your car insurance policy.

MoneySavingExpert has a good page about this, and nearly always recommends the same company for about £59 you get everything including European Travel.

Don't forget to try Quidco or similar too.

How would one do such a thing?

Get a quote from RAC (x) then ring the AA and say 'RAC have quoted me (x-£10). They usually match or beat.

I've had Britannia for the last few years, although I can't remember the exact cost off hand they were certainly cheaper than the AA/RAC. However, I do get some sort of a deal as they are part of the CSMA ( Civil Service Motorists Association, I think) membership of which is about the only, if rather small, perk of my job.

Just googling them - Autoexpress in 2011 said they were the best overall breakdown service based on a consumer survey.

I've been with the RAC for about twenty years. I was originally with the AA but went off them when they became too much of a political lobby organisation, and then a finger-in-every-pie-we-can-make-money-from organisation.

I've never had anything less than faultless service from them, on the few times I've needed them.

We buy RAC cover with Tesco Clubcard vouchers. No actual money changes hands, which is nice.

I get it "free" with my bank account (£12 a month), but as it also comes with insurance for both our iphones, and travel insurance it's a good deal.
