The thing is, business methods - and customers' expectations regarding contactability - have moved on a long way since the 80s.

shouldnt then a good modern businessman allow for alternatives in the event of "business critical" communication failure

Aye, business continuity / disaster recovery planning isn't just for big businesses, but I get how annoying it is to have total service outages when the mobile telcos actively promote themselves as the only necessary connectivity (as a generalisation mobile business revenues have increased throughout the recession as offices close and landlines are ditched in preference to home/mobile working for many SMEs and even big companies)
    Red ones are better.

BBC website says it's all hunky and dorey now, not that I have a problem on Vodaf One.

Surely the only continuity plan against your mobile service going off for a few days is to have another phone on another network (another number, more cost, etc)?

I can still be reached but only by e-mail or the landline if I'm at my desk.

There's a difference between business-critical and inconvenient (and the latter might become the former depending on how long it lasts) - if not being able to be contacted first time every time is business critical then there are ways of mitigating that risk - e.g. one-number services that will route calls to mobiles, landlines, VOIP services either based on days/times or configurable on the fly. Business continuity planning is about identifying risks (eg reliance on technology/suppliers/staff or flood fire & pestilence), researching solutions and weighing up risk versus cost.Even if the resulting decision is 'do nothing' then it should be as a result of having done some BCP, rather than not having got around to doing it /soapbox

    this,

If the only way of receiving/generating/doing current business is through a single mobile phone no on a single mobile provider...............not what Id call 'ideal'

All mobile phones, or whatever it is they've mutated into over the years, should be lined up and shot. Man should not have to depend on a small device for what humans have been conditioned to believe we can't manage life without. Life was more enjoyable without them in my opinion.
