    Default Reverberberberberberberberb :D

I've been thinking about reverbs. How do you decide what reverb to use on what sounds? Is there a general rule of thumb with room to manoeuvre? Or is it just one of those 'do it til it sounds good thingys?

Do you do it for all the channels or just select ones like the top end?

    Any thoughts on the guide?
It's been written for a while, so if there's anything I can do to improve it - I'd be happy to hear it!

Yeah its pretty good. Thank you very much

The audio examples work well. I think I'll be giving it a few more listens though, but its good how you've demonstrated the reverbs. It really shows the differences, like the spring being a big wet cave, and the convolution on the vocals making me think of a mosque in the middle of the desert and how too much can wash it out, but with the convulsion it didn't really seem to wash the vocals into mush.

So is it a standard thing with reverb sends to set the send to 0db and then set the level on the return/bus? I've been leaving the return at 0db and adjusting the send level.

I didn't know about that RT60 thing at all, but I guess if there were some suggestions on things to use certain reverbs on that might help. I know you've said Room can be used across the board to give everything a bit more life and hall can used for the 80s effect and spring for guitar, but I guess some does and don't might have been useful in the text, although I can see how that's covered in the audio examples i.e. too much reverb washing a sound out.

    Does that make sense?

That's just how I do it. I usually run 4-5 reverbs, one per instrument. I also mix into busses, so all of my reverbs are mixed on faders and then bussed together. Increases channel count but keeps flexibility and allows me to keep track of signal levels (they're always pre-fader, 0dB send).

There's absolutely no reason why I do this other than it works for me.

Please keep the idea that the reverbs chosen are for maximum effect. There are degrees between each of them! If I used subtle springs or rooms some people wouldn't be able to discern between them. In any mix of mine, only the drums would feed the room 'verb. The snare and toms might get the 80s treatment but it's material dependant. I'd use another smaller, darker, reverb for vocals.

Using reverb on a bus (@ 0dB send) allows me to EQ or compress the reverb and work together with the dry signal to achieve the desired result. If there's a lot of rumble through the reverb, and it's a medium room - a lot of the reflections will be mid-range in frequency, so I can remove sub 200Hz from the reverb channel without too many sonic problems. It still sounds like a medium reverb, but I've cleaned up the low end of the track - keeping space for the kick and bass.

No worries - Once my PhD is finished I'll probably start to write a music production book (with videos) as an online hobby.
