just tried one of these Mariner Cutter up at Intersound in Dursley, man it packs a punch. All solid, and a real small sized parlor.

If I didnt have my Faith Id snap it up at £325........................in fact I still might.........to keep down the in-laws caravan.......hmmm..........

    PARLOR...............

dont start, its always been spelt (guitar wise) that way as long as I can remember playing.......... I had this "discussion" with someone a few months back................and it does transpire that both spellings are actually now used, so I had to concede, to a draw

I think that the term is certainly associated with the American guitar making movement in the late 19th century.

How much of its design is truly American is probably one of those endlessly debatable subjects given the European origins and influence on makers such as C F Martin and the influence the instruments of the Austrian maker Stauffer may have had on their designs.

    Stauffer guitar circa 1815

    Martin guitar circa 1838

(Obviously not the American parlour design we associate witth the late 19th century but its an indication of the European influence on early Martin work)

There are certainly instruments around the time of Martins US beginning in the early 19th century that have similarities (not identical by any stretch) to some of the early American parlour guitars.

Panormo instruments certainly have that parlour ish vibe.

I'm not sure about the use of steel strings though on some of those instruments, that may be what really sets the American movement apart. Something I should look into one day.

There is a guy doing his PhD at my uni on the guitar and its beginnings in North America and the European influence upon it.

I think he is writing a book on it ill let you know if he publishes it, im sure it will be a great read he is extremely knowledgeable on the subject.
