Default New computer - will iTunes bork my iPod?

I've bought a new laptop and am in the middle of transferring files from my old PC.
I'm copying over my 'my music' folder and will be using my new lappy to sync my iPod in future.

If I download iTunes on my new machine, will I have to start all over again or is there a way of retreiving what you had on one machine and it magically appear on another?

I fear plugging my iPod Touch in to my laptop and losing everything on it when it tries to sync.

Copy all the music files over to the new computer. Also copy the library files. (Link

Then double click the .itl file and it should populate iTunes with your library.

Of course I could be talking absolute bobbins, but I think that should work.

my son lost my wife's itune account ( he did system restore on the laptop) although her ipod had all her banging choons on it. He managed to transfer the music off the ipod into the library on the laptop, sync the ipod with a new account and then load the music from the library to itunes and sync that with the ipod.

Can't explain it any better than that but we googled the problem and some nice person has posted it all step by step.

    Googled it too.

Setup the new PC, then copy the library files over the "empty" library.

Regardless though, back the library files up every week or so as iTunes will screw up sooner or later and lose the lot. It's a truly awful piece of software.

I've written a guide on here that works with the old ipods - not touches or phones. It's pretty simple really just 'show hidden files' on your ipod and drag the music folder back onto your pc

EDIT: didn't read the question properly, I'm talking about copying music from an ipod to pc durrr
    All practice and no theory
