I had a PM about a month or so ago, someone with 0 posts asking about a Mockingbird I had for sale about a year ago, telling me that I will post it to Spain for him and he will arrange the courier and he will pay the courier for the goods on inspection who will then forward the money on to me.

Obviously I deleted that one right away, I should have forwarded it though. Didn't think about it at the time.

Why don't something be added to the forum that you are unable to PM until you have reached at least a 10 post count. That will certainly stop all the 0 posters sending PM's. Could backfire though and have a load of new members posting random posts all over the place.
I know a couple forums have this in place and seems to work well.

Just reading these, been buying from privates including gumtree for ages always careful with obvious precautions, mailed a guy in Devon with a Gibson last week normal mail conversation "good " exchange numbers and had calls both ways "good again " then arranged to do bank transfer to his co op account "good again, checked with my bank Nat west they agreed he must be a genuine person and I should be covered with any problems" he received the money phoned me and thanked me said he would post next day, next day number not known and e mail account closed! Went to bank and surprise surprise not covered at all maybe talk to the police sir ' be very careful not always obvious scams, I now won't buy anything I can't touch( apart from known people) PS just in case he,s still using the same name for other accounts it was Chris Rowe.

Hmmm....let's see now. You see a guitar advertised on Gumtree in a different part of the country by someone you don't know from Adam. You make telephone calls and decide the bloke is genuine. Then you send him hundreds of pounds for said guitar and, low and behold, it never arrives. The 'genuine' bloke has now disappeared into the wild blue yonder with a big wedge of your hard-earned in his arse pocket.

Have you ever watched 'The Real Hustle'?

You don't need any more flak mate, you already know that you've been a dope. I guess it's in our nature to trust, and that's what the scumbag scammers prey on.

I did exactly the same thing as you last year. I did a deal off ebay for a black LP recently, when the axe didn't sell. I had the same details as you, telephone numbers, bank details etc. and I sent the bloke a grand, hoping he'd come through.

When I couldn't contact him the following day after I transferred the money, alarm bells rang. I finally managed to get him the day after, whereupon he apologised, and said he'd been totally bolloxed the previous day as it was his 21st birthday, and was so pissed he didn't know whether it was New Year, or New York. The guitar came through OK two days later, and I breathed I sigh of relief. The only reason I didn't go and pick it up was because it's a fucking long drive from Margate to North Yorkshire.

I wouldn't do that same thing again, but if I do see something miles away, I will get off my arse, drive to wherever, and exchange guitar for cash. But it would have to be something REALLY special for that to happen.

Not that I....ahem.... need any more guitars, of course..........................
