Default Thinking of going to a jam night tonight - but literally nothing prepared

I'm ashamed to say there is pretty much nothing I can sing/play all the way through that's suitable for a blues jam, and I've got work to do before (if) I go in any case.

I think I'll leave the guitar at home this time, and work on having one or two songs reasonably comfortably learnt for next time. Much as I'd be content to plonk away semi-inaudibly in the background over any given 12 bar, I'd feel a bit of a cop-out.
Whosoever steppeth upon a distortion pedal in my sight shall make a sound that is unclean.

Just ask them what key it's in and give some Neil-style bizarreness.

    And remember, attitude is everything:

I've not been to a jam night, but when it comes to the end of a night in my band this is the only rule

When I run jam nights I try to persuade people who haven't bought an instrument to borrow mine and have a go anyway. I hope you played in the end!

Observe, play, learn. The more you do that, the better it gets. Have fun!

    Hi Guys

I am trying to pluck up the courage to turn up at one of these jam sessions and give it a go, it does seem a little bit intimidating if you are not one of the regulars.

    Cheers

I went to a few in Camden many years ago. The etiquette was that if you were new, you don't get to perform but you listen and chat to the regulars. After a few visits you get invited up to play.

Generally, I was getting sick of playing 12 and 8 bar blues so stopped going. Went along to a jam in Soho many years later, still the same blues jams, Hendrix covers etc.

Do jam nights exist where blues isn't played? Would love to go to a folk or pop jam night.

I got tricked into a "Jam Night" where I was invited along to play by a mate who played double bass... told it was just a Jam but my old guitar teacher was there and a load of semi-pros ... and me without my fakebook, I struggled to keep up and would have been far happier listening!

I find open mic nights are the same, I was blown away by the songs and technique of some people then returned the week after to hear the same thing, and the week after that. I think the trick is you can have different acts around you every week if you're prepared to always go last and be patronised by the rest, whereas if you stick at it, in one place you get on earlier and get bored by the regulars unless you mix it up and play with them ... if they let you

Bloody hell it sounds even worse than I imagined

It seems you either sit there bored witless, or risk being run out of town for being too forward

Best not turn up with any decent gear or they'll f**king hang you

Kazoo and a penny whistle it is then

    Cheers
