Beats me why some people think it is cool though.

LOLs. You took that seriously. Bless.

But I highlight that sentance beause I wanted to address a logical and social falacy. OPINIONS CAN BE WRONG! I could have an opinion that Henry VIII had 800 wives, it would be my opinion, but it would be wrong. Just because something is your opinion doesn't mean that it can't be wrong - it can also be right...

There ARE opinions that can not be challenged - your favourite colour for instance even if you lied about what it was, no one would have evidence to challenge you on it.

You asserted that "Text Speak" originated and came into common usage because of mobile phones - opinion or not, that is wrong. Incorrect. False. It existed LONG before mobile phones could send text messages.

Now, I should take a second to appologise - you only did something that has annoyed me for a very long time, you relied on the "it's only my opinion" defense, which is not your fault, society has conditioned you to think that's a valid defense for BS

    You are in deed wrong.

As was said just a few messages before it began because telex operators needed a short hand that could be easily recognised making telex communication faster.

It also became popular in online chat rooms before it became popular on mobiles - because typing can take time, and conversations in chat-rooms online have a tendancy to wander if you take too long to type things out. Black - and - white chat screens like IRC channels could be having five or six seperate conversations in one place and you needed to keep typing faster and faster or risk losing your conversation to another (I'm convinced my multitasking skills have worsened since I stopped using IRC, and my typing skills)

Mobile phone messages were next - and indeed it was cheaper to keep messages short. But the power of text speak was not the cost efficiency, but the time efficiency. You can fire out texts with one hand very very quickly when you're making them much shorter - something that's harder and harder to do with mobile phones. Text messages now take longer and longer to type out (esspecially if like me you're dyslexic and have a slight OCD on punctuation and capitalisation in texts now that you can't get away with text speak). Predictive text tends to kill off the truncated and faster method of texting which is both good and bad.

Also most truncated text messages weren't long enough to cost more even with the extra characters... it was just faster.

I'm not sure if 'text speak' came about because of telex (or whatever the hell it was). I've no evidence other than anecdotal and theorising, but here goes:

I recall having a conversation with my Granddad, he said when he was younger he would communicate with his friends and his brother using telegrams. You'd go to the post office, write down what you wanted and they'd send it. He said they would charge per word and so him and his friends (and brother) would alternate the language used in order to save money, switching between english and latin depending on which language would use the least amount of words. This also had the effect of annoying the staff at the post office as it lost them money.

Thus I could theorise that acronyms would be used (also shorthand, but I can't see how that would cut down on the amount of words). I'm not sure what the 1930s version of ROFL would be though.
