It seems that any kind of grammar is optional these days.

It certainly is, judging from the latest pile of job application forms I've just had land on my desk. And so, it seems, is spelling. One bloke even managed to spell his address wrongly.

It wasn't like that in my day, I can tell you. (Cue Hovis-delivery type music.)

I bet it was worse. I bet the literacy rate was way lower than it is today, and that you wouldn't have got a pile of job applications in the first place back then because, grammar schools aside, people were generally less well-educated (as a population, not meant as an aspersions on any individuals). I also bet that your job probably didn't exist back then. Why? Progress.

Occasional grammatical slips in quickly typed informal emails or forum posts are forgivable, but poor grammar in formal communication or repeated errors are very annoying and gives a very poor impression. Apostrophe abuse, poor selection and use of homophones and overuse of reflexive pronouns seem to be getting more and more common.

On the subject of grammar, I hate the historic present tense. People who use it (news reporters and documentary makers I'm looking at you) are twats. No discussion. Twats.

Today I feel like a lump of dog shit. Yesterday afternoon & evening I also felt like a lump of dog shit and went to bed early. This morning I got up feeling no worse than I did yesterday morning so I've come to work, but tbh I'm not being very efficient.
