Default Drum Head Ripeness - Recording

So I will be recording drums soon and am curious as to when the perfect time would be to change drums heads on my kit. Should I change and tune them the day before recording and not play them till I record? Should I change them a week before to break them in? When is the drum head at its ripest tone?

The newer the heads the better generally, as long as they are stretched in tuning wise. Pay attention to squeaks and noise from the pedals and stands as well. Here's some tips to prepare as a band in general for recording from my own studio website

Thanks. I guess I'll go with the week before choice. We are going at it pretty hard up until the record date, so that week should stretch them. Cheers!
