My friend had surgery... but there's certain movements that some martial arts call for that seem to be doing harm to his shoulder many many many months after his recovery... it's a shame as he's phenominally good

    Sorry to hear that.

I've just had a quick google and was gobsmacked to read the stay in hospital can be as little as 1 day post op, tho' more usually between 1 and 3 days. For some reason I'd got it into my head the op would entail staying in for a couple of weeks at least.

One of the first things I read when searching for info on fractured shoulders was from someone suggesting a suffer, if they have a recliner, they'd better get used to sleeping in it. I have one tho' it's so uncomfortable at the best of times that idea was quickly forgotten, but after barely getting any sleep at all in bed, whether lay down or propped up, I decided to try the sofa last night.

Brilliant, a full 5 hours undisturbed sleep, which might not sound a lot but is only slightly less than my pre injury sleeping pattern I was so refreshed when I woke today, if it hadn't been for the sling I would have thought I'd just had one too many drinks last night, fallen asleep on the sofa and had a particularly bad dream.

Not as successful a nights sleep as the first one on the sofa last night (mainly due to my elbow currently hurting more than my shoulder ) but it was still a lot better than my bed

    Thanks folks

I'm slowly getting used to how limiting this injury is and will probably have learned to fully adapt the day I go in for the op, should that be the way to go.

Don't fret overly much that your elbow is hurting - doesn't mean you've definitely damaged it as well...

The way the nerves in the arm work is a bit crap - if the nerve itself is tweaked rather than the nerve endings the brain has to interpret and guess where the hurt really is, and it's remarkably easy for this to happen because of the way the nerves go around the shoulder and out from the body.

You've probably changed your posture becaues of the hurty shoulder - which is pretty much automatic - and this can put preasure on a nerve causing pain.

Now with the way the body works and tries to repair itself you can end up with swelling caused by this nerve response. This is sometimes the case when Carpel Tunnel symptoms present - which is why cortisone injections and carple tunnel can be totally ineffective and why some people will tell you that only yoga and physio work - which wont work in the event that the carpel tunnel is genuinely damaged/inflamed...

When I tore my rotator cuff my elbow became swollen and hurt like a bastard, and my wrist felt like I'd sprained it... was wearing a braced wrist support and a neoprene elbow support... pain in my shoulder was the lesser of pains... even though I knew what had caused the damage it didn't seem the shoulder was worth paying attention - not till I had to break hard while riding the bike, then the pressure/weight on my shuolder left me in so much pain I almost fell off. A&E nurse asked me to move my arm in certain ways and it turned out my range of motion was massively impaired - was a suprise I must have been subconsciously adopting a different posture that just didn't use my arm in such a way... arm was put in sling and with the weight off my shuolder wrist and elbow stoppped hurting within a day.

There's a good book It's Not Carpel Tunnel which goes into detail about such things.

At least with a break in the shoulder there's no chance of diagnosis and they're not going to end up operating on your wrist when the damage is in the shoulder

Thanks for the info I can ease the discomfort when sat by straightening my arm, but it stiffens within seconds making it unbelievably painful when using the sling again.

I've got beyond genuinely wishing amputation was a option, and I told them I wouldn't make a fuss over anaesthetic being used

I know it's churlish to complain, but bloody hell............

I got a phone call mid afternoon from the orthopedic surgeons secretary letting me know I'd been booked in for a CT scan on my shoulder this coming Friday, short notice enough if I lived nearby, but said appt is for 8.30am. Luckily I've managed to arrange a lift

An hour after that call the CT dept rang wanting to know if was I free tomorrow afternoon as they'd pencilled me in for a scan then. I told them about the Friday appt and asked them to double check, but I wouldn't be free anyway as this shoulder injury means I've got to shop online atm and a delivery is booked for between 2 and 4pm and there'd be nobody here to sign for it as I live alone.

At this rate surgery will only be a matter of days away, which is all well and good if I wasn't booked in to have a 24 hour heart monitor fitted/removed first thing next Thursday and Friday mornings. If they want me in for surgery early next week I'm hoping they'll be able to do that while I'm in having the shoulder seen to.
