I can't help loving the thick 80's sounds I can get from it
I can't figure out how to install that, I keep getting a prompt saying windows needs to know what program created that file or something along that line and then I dont know what to do. I have that same problem with most of the freebies mentioned on here.

You need to put the file into your plug in's folder and then open it through your DAW of choice.

I have z3ta+ and I think this is absolutely one of the best virtual synths...
You can have beautiful and complex pads, any kind of basses, intriguing leads...
If you need an arpeggiator, z3ta+ can use both midi file and usual arp techniques (up/down/random on 1-2-3-4.. octaves). I don't use arpeggiator to often but I think it's anyway a "good weapon" on a synth

Moreover Fx section is of high level (it has very nice reverb, any kind of delay - stereo, rcl, ping-pong - distortion, phaser-chorus-flanger and eq).
You can also use z3ta+ as multi-fx and in this way also from the most simple synth you can obtain complex and stunning sounds (just chaining z3ta+_fx...)

I totally agree with the number 1 I got turned onto zebra by the free CM version and I gotta say the full version of zebra 2 is one of the better purchases I have made!

We've just bought Omnisphere. It's pretty darn awesome so far.
    Nice and sparkly.

I'm surprised no one's brought up NI's Pro-53. That thing's capable of bring out some beastly sounds. I mainly use it for crushing basses. I've also been surprised by FAW circle, definitely useful, but I'm still learning how to use.
    Here's my top twelve list:

    1.) Absynth
    2.) Predator
    3.) Pro-53
    4.) Albino
    5.) Dimension Pro
    6.) z3ta+
    7.) FM8
    8.) Circle
    9.) Arturia Moog Modular/Minimoog
    10.) Massive
    11.) Zebra 2
    12.) Spectrasonics Trilogy

    Some honorable mentions:
    -Olga
-Reaktor (not really a synth though.
    -Rapture
    -Tal Bass Line
    -Toxic Biohazard
    -Arturia CS-80V
    -Minimonsta
    -Audio Realism ABL2
    -V Station
    -Vanguard
    -Korg Legacy Wavestation
    -Blue
    -impOSCar
    -Sylenth 1 v2

As far as non synths go:
    -B4II
    -Akoustic Piano
    -Kontakt
    -Battery 3
    -Beatscape (hell yeah)
    -The Olgaric FX bundle
    -CamelPhat
    -Camel Space
-Vokator 7 Spektral Delay (It's sad NI kicked these two out. They were truly some fine instruments)
    -Guitar Rig
    -Amplitube 2

    And for freebies:
    -Superwave P8 (awesome)
    -Synth 1
    -Oatmeal
    -Crystal
    -AMB Bass Rack
    -The NOVAKILLER/GODKILLER/ other KILLER synths
    -Tal Bass Line and U-no-60
    -And the GTG series

I used to use one called SCC1 Grand Piano for ages (before I got a Yamaha digital stage piano). It's quite good, but a certain region has quite a lot of ring on it if memory serves.

Back on topic - what are your thoughts on Embracer (nice, simple but lush pad synth that comes with Cubase) and Cheeze Machine (free plugin that's great for that "Monkey Ball" phased effect you hear on Heart Of Glass).

    Hi,

I've had a good time with Arturia's Jupiter 8v ... however it has some stuck buttons on the interface that you can not re-program ... and their web site is the worst at tech support and help ... or worse ... an answer!

Was looking around for some strings to play with ... and tried IK's smaller version of the Miroslav ... unffortunately their small version is not polyphonic and you can only mix anything unless you know how to use your DAW ... it's too bad that the man who had his name used for this, was never this bad and cheap of a musician ... and never ripped off his audiences!

So far, honestly ... some of the VST freebies are the best and found on VST Planet or KVR Audio ... for the more expansive software ... I have to admit that it has been a total disappointment ... and worse ... a total mess ... you will have spent a fortune before you can figure out what you need ... there's an "economy" for you ... and many programs are NOT as good as advertised, and their support and communication is worse.

At least on the freebies, you have nothing to lose, and you already are not expecting much ... so finding a jewel here in there is fun, nice ... and you will endup using it several times.

Honestly ... there is too much ... and too many magazines out there supporting "their own" and saying grand things that are never there for you and I. I have yet to see a single program in all the computer years (almost 20 now) that is as good as advertised or better ... actually there is one ... it was Word Perfect 5.1 ... and a couple of companies made sure to kill it in a few years so they wouldn't look so bad by comparison.

    - Absynthe is really nice.
    - The M-Audio related family is nice ... but the folks there ruin it
    - The Arturia stuff is really good ... generally ... but don't expect support. They don't speak english intentionally there!

Have not checked the Roalnd/Korg stuff yet ....

The smaller stuff in the Internet on VST is a 50/50 mish mash ... that is really only worth the hassle if you have some basics and know how to make your way around a few knobs and faders ... it would be much nicer if that was not the case and one could set about "studying" different sounds and helping themselves to create them ... instead of the thought process that I must know a Sine wave ... so that I can do .... it's bizarre and crazy really.

I'd say the u-he software is pretty amazing, Native Instruments stuff if you're into more compliated sound design (Reaktor, Absynth, FM8 are awesome but you gotta spend time), and definitely Arturia for really good sounds really quick.
Btw Moshkito, I think they might have changed their support around? Recently got in touch for an installation problem and they were really helpful.

Oh, and def can't leave out Rob Papen Predator.
