Default Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds

Had the house to myself all day for once so kicked back, turned up the stereo and for the first time I played said album, all 4 sides (LP record), from start to finsh. Wow.

Heard it said many times but this magnum opus would defo have made a better movie than the Tom Cruise version. Gotta concur.

Uuullllaaaa ! (helps to have heard the album)....

As a child, i used to stick the old mans vinyl copy on...used to love it, captivating imagination and allowing the listener to visualise the story. Bought the remastered version on CD a few years back when it came out and it still holds up, its fantastic stuff, and Richard Burtons narration is timeless.

Saw the live show in Birmingham a couple of years ago.
    Absolutely stunning, brilliant musicians etc.
Would have been a brilliant film sound track!!

I've never understood why a hand-drawn, animated film that follows the events of the album has never been made.

It would have been a massive hit and would have been amazing.

It's also a mystery why a film version set in London at the end of the 19th century was never made.

Perhaps Mark Gatiss is working on something (he did the remake of First Men in the Moon).

This is a huge topic within the HG Wells Society. As indeed, is a proper film of TTM.

But we/they are academics: it's mostly about the arguments, not the results

Mark Gatiss is on record saying he'd love to do it.

To be fair, the Cruise version was better than the first movie. Still not a patch on the book or Jeff Wayne's album though.

What I remember most about the album is that I first heard the single 'Forever Autumn' and thought it was a beautiful (if sad) song. Then I heard the full album and it scared the shit out of me! This was before I read the book, I would have been around ten.

What I don't understand is why movie producers think they need to alter such a powerful story in any way at all. There is no technical reason for it, certainly not today. The same applies to so many - possibly all? - great books that have been turned into films though.

George Pal's 1960 version of TTM is very good though, certainly far better than his execrable WoTW.
