I was thinking of swapping one of the PJs for the Rockdriver. Dunno.

It's always worth a try. I imagine your rockdriver will be well broken in too so you could get a nice blend going on.

Although...the rockdriver is 60W and the PJs are 50W so I'm not sure you can mix them. Both 8Ohm though.

just so long as the impedances are the same you will be absolutely fine.

^ yep, agreed, that'll be fine. wattage doesn't matter (aside from keeping an eye on the total wattage handling, that'll mean the cab is still good for 100 watts, though, so no real difference overall).

I'd say it was down to it being smaller then the 1936 but the H&K cab is tiny and has much more body and depth than the Roadkill. It must be the speakers I guess.

I should probably have discussed the speaker choice with Tom but tbh he just offers the 2 types on the website (Eminence PJs and Governers) so I assumed that was all you could get. Although I guess he could order any speaker you want but it's very hard to tell what you want without trying it.
yeah he can get any eminence you want (or at least he could when i got mine). Or you can get it unloaded and put anything you want in there.

it's definitely very hard deciding on speakers- they're a bit like pickups in that respect, outside of the one or two popular models it's difficult if not impossible to try anything else, and even more difficult to get to try them in a situation which will actually tell you anything useful- you ideally need to get to try them in the same cab you'd be using, and with your amp, to really tell you anything (much like trying pickups in a completely different style of guitar from yours will only tell you so much).

there are a few decent youtube vids which might be worth a look. admittedly they do tell you an awful lot more when you've actually tried the speakers in question

emailing the speaker manufacturers can be useful, too. they won't tell you to buy from a different manufacturer, but at least they should advise you of the best one from their range for what you want.

the other thing is, if the cab is really sound small and weedy, there could be something wrong with the wiring or something like that. GBs sound different from v30s or g12t75s, but they shouldn't sound way smaller, either (and i'm guessing the same goes for the PJ).

I'd definitely be cautious about judging your new cab quickly. Most speakers seem to have some kind of break in period. Even without speakers breaking in, I find that swapping between cabs always takes me a while. I've come to think that my ears become used to one, and I don't like the sound of the other at first, but I often warm to it after a while.

All of the above could be a load of boll0cks though.

i've noticed that too, certainly with new speakers which I'm not so used to. Even with ones i am used to, my ear gets used to the ones I was using last

So I had a bit of a play today - swapped one of the Private Jacks in the Roadkill cab with the Rockdriver in the H&K. Unexpectedly, this seemed to make little difference...the cabs sounded pretty much as they did before I swapped the speakers. So I swapped them back. Leaving the back off the Roadkill cab seemed to give it a bit more body so maybe that's something to think about.

But it looks like the boxy-ness seems to come from the plywood construction. The H&K is quite a bit smaller and is made of chipboard so there you go...all this stuff about plywood construction being so awesome is clearly a load of balls. I always suspected as much.

90% of cabs on the market are made of ply. the rest are generaly ply with a MDF baffle such as the laneys which sound very muddy.

I'm pretty sure my 1936 was chipboard. The back panel was definitely chipboard. And when I swapped the speakers I remember thinking it was all chipboard.
