Newb question on Midi and VSTs

Hi

I have a Novation Nocturn 49 Controller Keyboard that I am using to control VSTs in Reaper.
I have finally managed to get the Automap software working correctly so that it will control the synth in Kontack Player or other stand alone VSTs. The problem I am having is that if I move knobs whilst recording, to chang the cutoff for instance, those inputs are not recorded so when I play back the track it is just the held note playing with none of the knob adjustments registering.
I haven't done this stuff since I was a kid and then I used my dads full hardware setup into an Atari ST so all signals were just sent and recording from the hardware.
Could someone help me with how to get this working for my VSTs please.

Have you activated the "write" button in Reaper?
This have to be activated to be able to record automation. Read more in the manual.

That's a lot more than I've been able to do. I can't get automap talking between Reaper and my Novation Impulse.

Anyway, the thing I had to do to get Reaper to record controller messages from the sliders is to use: Reaper - Preferences - Midi Devices - right click on the controller (Impulse in my case) and make sure "Enable input for controller messages" is ticked. (By default only "Enable Input" was ticked).

Not sure if this helps as it might all be different using Automap.
