    That's interesting, but may just be spiel.
    I read an article within the last year about scientists putting a Strad through an MRI scanner. What was revealed was lots of inconsistency with thicknesses, and a fair amount of woodworm holes/troughs!
    These were assessed to be the key to the Strad tone.

    Having heard a real Strad played in a Cathedral, I suspect there are masses of factors. It was loud enough to be herd over the St Giles Cathedral organ without micing. I have never herd another stringed instrument with projection and volume even close to that violin.

    I remember that Maton Guitars (Australian guitar builder Chris May's company) used to treat their spruce tops in some kind of kiln,with microwaves, or somesuch, to "age" them. At least, this is what I was told when I worked at Ivor Mairant's Musicentre back in the day.
