Default Weakness in finger - problem

For the last 7 weeks I've been on crutches, following a foot operation.
I found, much to my annoyance/sadness etc, that due to my left hand grasping the crutch handle tightly, my left index finger has become weaker and doesn't stretch out so far from my middle finger.

This means that I can't play bar chords properly at the moment - the finger can't press down firmly enough on the fretboard.

Other than practice, is there any other good exercises / techniques I should try to try to strengthen the finger and improve its reach?

how much longer on the crutches?

with all the unusual stress and strain upon your grip and forearm, it may be that the finger requires rest and relaxation more than anything else

I'm off the crutches now (been a week). I'm getting better at bar chords now but am worried that if I rest too much, it will make the finger worse

Maybe you have been using certain muscles too much and others not enough, while you've been on the crutches.

I think you'll find that the finger starts coming back into action soon. I certainly wouldn't worry about resting it. I've only ever found this to help my fingers.

    All the best man.
