    3) Gary Moore on Oh Pretty Woman - the loudest-sounding guitar recording ever achieved

    4) David Gilmour on Comfortably Numb - the live Pulse tone just edges it for me

    5) Walter Trout on Going Down from Live No More Fish Jokes. First chorus of his solo at about 3:30 where he's on the edge of feedback the whole time. Similar at the end of She's missing from the Transition album but couldn't find it on youtube
Weird, 'cause I can see the appeal in all of these apart from the Alan Holdsworth which is like fingernails down a blackboard for me.

On another note, good to see so much Neil Young on the table though

    1. James Burton on Mystery train/Tiger man medley on Elvis in Vegas 69 recording. That tele actually sounds angry
    2. Dave Edmunds and Rockpile, Es335 on Oh what a thrill. Comeplete ripoff of Chuck berrys sweet little rock and roller solo, but played better.
    3. Gary moore on LP doing the stumble, awesome.
    4. Scotty Moore on ES295 on Elvis sun record, Baby lets play house.
    5. Richie Blackmore on strat Since youve been gone. That outo solo is wicked.

What a disgustingly difficult question to answer...

A loud Les Paul or Tele is the simplest answer I can think of.

I really enjoyed this thread but it was so tormenting trying to come up with five that I had to give up and just enjoy some of my fellow forumites' choices instead.

One I do want to mention, however, is Alex Lifeson (a guy whose tone I don't especially like, normally) in La Villa Strangiato - the quiet breakdown in the middle.. Cleanish guitar, touch of reverb..then swelling the volume control into a lovely loud twiddle session. Ace.
