    Hi folks,

Thanks for the responses so far. I'm beginning to wish I'd just told him to ram it when he originally asked but we'll see what he says to my offer of doing the whole thing for £60. So far no response to the email I sent around lunch time yesterday and he's usually pretty quick to reply. At the end of the day, if he's not prepared to pay me that then good luck in finding a guitar player who knows the set and can fit into the band for next weekend.

Incidentally, this morning I was reminded of some of the worse numbers in the set when my gf heard me noodling around harmonic minor scales and mistook it for "Everything" by Michael Buble.

The MD plays in the trumpet line, usually taking 1st or 2nd parts but his tone is absolutely awful and he's always far too loud.

If facing him bothers you, you could tell a little white lie:-
Send him an email now and thank him for his consideration, but you have now been offered and accepted a chance to go out on the same date, tickets have been bought on your behalf etc.
I suspect his silence means he is busy checking alternate guitar players!!!! You're being played like a fish.
In reality you should just tell him to f#ck off, I think I might have said that before.

This is always the way in big bands - run by a psychopath playing trumpet.

I've got a nagging feeling you suffer from low self-esteem if you're going to suffer any of this kind of shit. I also wonder why you bother asking us for advice if you're going to ignore it, pehaps you want sympathy and support instead.

I read the first few comments on your TGP thread and I was pretty shocked at how many people suggested sticking with it, and how it's a 'challenge' and good experience. I don't know anything about a big band situation but I can guarantee there would be very little keeping me around to put up with the insufferable shit the MD appears to be. You're being too generous, IMO. Maybe if you walk he'll see a bit of sense, but I doubt it. In any case, you should sack it off.

If for some unfathomable reason you do decide to do this, don't take a penny less than the £70 you asked for in the first place, and insist on being paid up front. That should prevent any 'renegotiation' later and also show him the level of respect you have for him. Chances are he'll refuse since that's not the way it's done.

If he doesn't accept that, do not give in or negotiate, walk away. Or as Sporky says, raise the fee again until he gets the message. Personally I don't think £70 is enough anyway.

The only way dickheads like this will learn is when they can't have their own way and it bites them, preferably after they've already committed to something that pulling out of will lose them face or cost them money.

In my personal experience it was Sax... it must be something to do with the brass metal making them megalomaniacs.

    Hi Folks,

Sorry, I usually just check MR at work!

I've not heard a peep from him all weekend so I'm assuming he's found someone else which is fine by me. After all the feedback on here and really thinking about it, I didn't want to do the gig in the first place and now my gf and I are planning a night out at an Egyptian restaurant for next Saturday and we may actually, finally, see the new Batman movie!

Thanks for all your replies and advice.
