I have raised the issue of this rant before and it gets mentioned frequently by Charles Shaar Murray in his various columns.
However, it was a long time ago, he was stoned at the time, he has expressed regret for it, he has worked with a large number of black musicians and gives credit and royalties to black musicians and heads a charitable trust which supports a largely black population.
On balance I think the Birmingham rant can be seen as a slightly shocking historical artifact and not the standard by which Mr Clapton should be judged these days.
He isn't doing anything new or interesting musically but I don't think he is pretending to and nor will people going to the concerts be expecting that. It is what it is.

    Well said
“Jazz, isn’t that just a series of mistakes disguised as musical composition?”

I dunno, I don't know if i can forgive that. He was asked to apologise for it a few years ago on TV and he refused, saying he was making an anti-immigration speech, nothing else. That's not an anti-immigration speech. Personally (while I've never been to Clapton's depths in terms of heroin etc), I spend a considerable amount of time - to my detriment - very drunk/stoned/whatever else, and I have never in my life hit out with comments like that. Booze and drugs do not excuse an attitude like that. It has to be in there to come out.

Anyway, it's in the past, but regardless of whether he's changed his ways, i think it's fairly understandable why i'm a little uneasy giving him any respect. That and the fact that he bores me to tears

That's all fine then. You don't have to listen to his music or go to his shows.

Other people do want to and will.

Really??!!! Ah shit, here was me thinking I'd managed to start an uprising. Thought I'd single-handedly finished Clapton. Silly me.
