It's very much Peters tone. There is a story (iirc in the Brunning book about F.Mac) where the support bands guitarist has his amp fail and PG lends his amp for the set, the guitarist struggles to get a usable tone out of the amp all through the set. PG goes on, just plugs in without adjusting anything and sounds like angels singing. I'm paraphrasing obviously but that's one of the stories.
Listen to some of his recent live work, the gear is generic, his speed is not very impressive but the tone is there.
Another story goes along the lines of PG visits Gibson (in more recent times) and after a walk around the factory the Gibson Exec shows Peter the wall with all the current production guitars and offers any guitar as a gift. PG walks out with an Epiphone.
Nice Gear makes us feel good about playing and helps to an extent (and boy do I need all the help I can get) but it is in the hands.
