    Default 15", 16ohm bass driver.......HELP!

    Hi folks

My old '72 Celestion 15", 16ohm is no more and need a replacement. This for an old WEM Dominator Mk1 Bass combo (valve) from 1972. The combo is rated at 15-30 watts, although we're talking valve watts, so ideally I'd like a 50-200 watt bass driver but would consider up to 450 watt at a push.

Anyone aware where I might find a driver with these specs? Or, better still, anyone got one they want to get rid of?!!!

Are you using it for bass, or guitar?

If you're using if for guitar, don't put in anything too high-powered or designed for proper bass, it will sound dull and lifeless.

About 50W is ideal, 100 at the most - "valve watts" are actually less hard on speakers anyway, even though they sound louder.

Those old Celestions are't too rare, in fact - and no-one wants them for bass because they can't take modern power levels, so they tend not to be expensive either.

You could also get the old speaker reconed.

Hi Guy, bad luck with the speaker.

I know you use your's for bass. Yuo could try Ampaholics http://www.ampaholics.org.uk/ they carry a stock of old Celestions so may have one. No idea on pricing though. Alternatively reconing may be the way, there's a company in Wembley that gets a good name.

    Hi Gordon

    Yeah, it's a pain but I shall/am persevering!!

Ampaholics is a good suggestion and I may well give Phil a try but I may have it sorted! I have managed to mend the bekelite terminal plate that was in 3 pieces using rigid plastic to reinforce it and it's worked well. Terminals now cleaned up and ready to go. It had been mended once before so very tricky but it's as solid as it needs to be now.

I have also assessed the braided wires from terminal plate to cone and although one was broken they appear to be intact at the cone end. I've just re-glued them with copydex to make 100% sure they'll stay put.

Managed to solder the broken braided wire and that's now OK so I'll put it all together tomorrow once the glues have dried properly and give it a whirl. If it works I'll be made up!! No reason why it shouldn't unless there is some internal damage I can't see.

So, maybe sorted but if not, as you say, getting Wembly Loudspeakers to recone is the other option and one I'd be happy to go for. It's a lovely amp and well worth hanging in with.

.....I seem to have managed to
