    Martin D-28

I'm not being funny. It is possible to buy a 'once only' acoustic guitar, but if you *really* mean once only, you're going to have to spend about ten times as much as most people would consider paying for a first guitar.

*If you can afford it* I would genuinely recommend the Martin - buy used, and it will hold its value. Even then, there's the possibility that it might not be the 'right guitar for you' when you become an experienced player - since personal taste varies enormously - but it's probably got a better chance than almost any other.

For what it's worth, when I could barely play - but had already started working on guitars so I knew what I was getting - I was offered a Martin D12-35 12-string. I scraped together enough to buy it, and it helped teach me how to play, because it was beautiful-sounding but unforgiving. That was 1989, and I've still got it.

I was going to suggest a Gibson for the same reason.

Not as silly as it may seem, for if the OP doesn't "get the bug" the resale value will recoup most of the outlay.

you could also consider one of the cheaper range martins like a dm, dr or d16 which although may not be as pretty as a d28, you still get the big martin sound, good playability and like icbm said, pick up a second hand one from between £500 to £800.
but if you've got the cash then get a d28!

Very good answer, acoustic/electric from mid 1980's, can be bought cheap.

I've said this on other posts here today. Blueridge guitars are definately worth a look. I've been playing electric guitar for years but recently decided to go back to the acoustic which I played continuously as a kid. I tried a Blueridge BR243 and I am totally amazed by it and it's price. It's a keeper!

    Hope it helps
