First of all you will need a decent Audio Interface which has low to very low latency otherwise there will be a delay in you hitting a string and hearing the result.

Almost any AI you choose will come with recording software (aka "DAW") and most of those, e.g. Cubase will have some form of basic guitar processor plugin in them.

If you download the DAW Reaper that has quite comprehensive FX in it. Native Instruments have free guitar software download and their AI, the Komplete Audio 6 is one of the best in its price range, especially low latency.

My son is the player and he rarely uses such software (for obvious reasons!) but others here might so maybe they will offer their opinions on some of it?

My only suggestion is to go to the IK Multimedia site and download Amplitube Free, it has three rather good models to process your guitar...

Other than that use your bank card or money and support the excellent work that the programmers are doing and buy either Amplitube 3, Guitar Rig or my personal favorite Peavey Revalver

All good advice ^ . Can I repeat? You will need an AI to keep latency low. Also, most of this software, GRig certainly, takes quite a bit of PC resource so you will need something pretty new and zippy to run it in realtime.

Yarrgh!!! Got a File Opener! I make it a policy now not to use free software unless it comes "naked" i.e. no Toolbars, Down load Managers or other ***t.

I bet a month does not go by when I do not find something in Revounistaller that I did not knowingly fekkin' put there!

The POLITE name for those people on other forums is ARSEHOLES! Do not give them a second thought.

We all have to start somewhere and in anycase, to slag off the people who use free software is to also insult the people who give of their time for nothing to write the code. Just as do the many "professionals" here that have businesses of their own (not I, semi-retired layabout me)to run and yet give of their time and experience simply to help others.

Re the "lagging", the latency. Sorry but that is not caused by any software issues but by the computer itself. Even if you had a state of art i7 Ivybridge PC with 8G of ram the latency would STILL be there untill you got a decent Audio Interface.

I have here a very cheap and simple interface that is claimed to have "ultra low latency" (Berry UCA 202. No! I don't believe it either but read on....) I will check this out and report back. It would be nice to get a guitar thru' a PC with near zero latency for £20, can't see it myself!

It's been awhile since i messed about with a PC for music making , but iirc using the driver Asio4all you can get 2-5ms easily enough with an i3 or even an older Pentium

I think you may have missed where the OP said that the "free" software he was using previously was illegally downloaded and cracked commercial software, not legitimate freeware.
