I would recommend the book but maybe it depends on the guitarists present ability. ie What i took from the books first few pages may be worthless to other more advanced guitarists etc. Like Frankus i find the diagrams frustrating to read as i am left handed and headed(he knows what i mean) when reading chord diagrams. I dont hear tunes as well playing a I IV V as standard. The progressions in the book help me hear Melodies a lot more, as if ive heard lots of songs using these progressions but cant quite name them. imo It makes my playing sound more interesting/melodic in general better. I find i dont need any other instrument to acompany me. So eff off bass players.
