I don't know. I guess tone has something to do with the amp and the guitar itself. I guess I didn't consider that.

A good strat is pretty much unbeatable to my ears, and in the right hands* they can do a pretty darn good 335 impression too.

    *...and amp

*edit* If we're including modern gear in here too, I'll go with a PRS DGT - just about covers every vintage tone you could need in a gig but all in one beautiful guitar

It is curious - if pushed I would say my favourite guitar is my 335 ('96) and yet the one I take to gigs is my US Std. Guess that might be something to do with the fact that the current band 'covers' a lot of ground, so it would seem is the strat is the most versatile of the classic guitars. That said, the Tele comes mighty close, and has a few tricks of its own.

If it came to it, I'd keep at least one Strat (a '57), and my Gary Moore sig Les Paul.

In my band, we cover a wide range of rock covers, by people such as Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Bad Company, Free, ZZ Top, Hendrix, The Who, and Clapton (to name a small few). I can pretty much cover all those tones using a combination of Strat and LP.

I suppose my favourite guitar tone of all time would have to be Hendrix at the Isle of White Festival, from 1969. But it's a close-run thing with Mick Ralphs Les Paul tones of the mid 70s.

Er ... mate ... Hendrix wasn't at the 69 IOW Festival ... I know I was there in 1970 and saw him!
