    Great news indeed.
What happens after 11pm though? Does a man from the council pull the plugs out?

I hope so too. There are the usual antis, of course... "Lisa Lavia from the Noise Abatement Society said there will be a "dramatic rise" in noise complaints that will "set residents at odds with local businesses"."

Speaking from personal experience of once living above a pub, this isn't true. Not only will there still be enforceable rules about times and actual noise levels, bands weren't a problem for me - it was the constant thud-thud-thud of the house jukebox that was, even though being very compressed, the level was not above the limits. Bands were probably louder on peaks, but since live sound isn't as compressed, less loud on average, and the sound traveled through the building much less badly... helped by the band's amps being on the floor, rather than ceiling-mounted like the house speakers (as most are).

Anything to get music back to being live and not piped has to be a good thing.

I would imagine so, but it's an improvement at least.

The environment people from the council don't get overtime so they are unlikely to get called out after 11:00pm unless there is a persistent problem. However if the police get lots of calls regularly from a number of people, then they will object to the magistrate when the license comes up for renewal, and so the landlord is well advised to ensure the local impact of noise is minimised for the longevity of his business. We on the other hand just wanna Rawk out without restraint.

Same as what used to happen if a pub served alcohol after 11pm, I presume, i.e. you eventually lose your drinks licence.

They didn't send someone round at ten past 11 to disconnect the barrels in the cellar, did they?
