I'm sure there are occasions where it's not so much a case of cowardice, as a realisation that it's a futile gesture. Some people sleep better when they don't have to deal with confrontation, and the fall-out from it.. Not disagreeing, or arguing - just saying.

I would also add, there's the fact that you have to look after your own career and personal welfare. There's little point in ending up unemployed and not able to feed yourself or pay the rent, no matter how noble the reason was for losing/quitting your job. I acknowledge selfishness is something some people will criticise, but it's a sad fact of life, if you don't look out for yourself, nobody else will.

While I personally suspect there is probably truth in the acusations I'm not sure it's fair to villify someone without proof of wrong doing - or at least strong convincing evidence...

A handful of testemonies decades after the fact, after the death of the accused, amidst media furore is not sufficient in my mind to turn a some-what eccentric old man into a white-hair-cigar-smoking-devil-of-evil with wandering hands. Yet.
