There is no evidence from what I've said that I support the idea of constant progress.

A man more prone to listening, than you, might chance a question to confirm this preconception.

To my mind it's a trend and I really cannot be arsed by people decrying it by whining like a bitch with a skinned knee about how their sister Dotty has a bad cold so therefore the world isn't constantly getting better.

If you want to take two arbitrary dates as indicators and then look at one dimension of each as a means to trend, go ahead - it's flawed and I'd expect you to know. Life gets better because of advancements in technology, philosophy and the like and often a set-back in one promotes advances in others.

The war gave us jet engines, nuclear power, the space race...now we're running to evolve society to keep pace with the technollogies and their implications - it's uncomfortable, but it's still progress. Struggle creates the need to improve and new struggles are created.. we may some day find ourselves in an evolutionary cul-de-sac but that prison will be contentment - and I don't think the human mind can handle too much of that.

Don't be so gloomy. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. So long Mags

Life gets better here, where we are at the forefront of pretty much every major development. Life has been pretty much the same for severakl thousand years in many parts of the world though.

If you look at Swiss history most of the people who became Swiss were escaping terror in other European states. (eg Swiss French after the Declaration of Nantes was renounced, Swiss Italians escaping the Borgias ect.) Of couse Italy was a collection of principalities and not a country called Italy at that time.

Nearly all of human societal evolution has been in terms of boom and bust. We were lucky to end up on one of the boom sides of things. But there are plenty examples of societies on the wrong end of the stick. If it is a trend, then it is very much a random walk vaguely following a line kind of trend. And there are plenty of examples of dead civilisations that underscore the point.

Had a chat with my Mum this morning - she worked at the Beeb in the sixties and said that dressing rooms were essentially just shag rooms for most of the "stars" of the day.

Loads of girls would turn up at TV centre willing to do anything to get near the big names of the day and the "stars" just went for it - perhaps not unsurprisingly.

Expect a few more names to be exposed before too long - including at least one more Knighthood.

I'm surprised Jimmy Page has been slaughtered yet.....

I know that he's probably guilty of all that stuff, but does anyone feel uncomfortable with the complete disregard for the principle of 'innocent until proven guilty' here ? The police stating 'Savile had a sexual preference for teenage girls'' before the investigations are barely under way is rather dodgy don't you think ? You can bet your arse they wouldn't be so eager to assassinate his character were he still alive with a team of lawyers to back him.

So far, all there are are allegations. Probably true in my personal opinion, but one would hope the law and the police had higher standards to adhere to.
