Default Change of taste as I get older

More and more as I get older, I listen to songs which are not predominantly Guitar based.
I now listen to songs without thinking about what a great/bad/tone/technique blah blah blah and listen to the song as a whole. Which enables me to think more of what could I do on guitar to add to the song. I find it a way of freeing up idea`s without worrying about whats gone before. For instance there is no way of thinking about Johnny b goode without thinking automatically of that opening riff, or those signature Chuck Berry licks.
    Quite therapeutic
So on that note I have been listening to Marketa Irglova, some lovely melodies and very laid back yet, drums seem at odds with music creating a slightly unsettled feel.

Same here, although I was never very guitar-oriented in the first place...

It makes absolutely no difference to me whether there is guitar in the music I listen to or not, although probably most of what I do like does contain guitars since it's the predominant instrument in modern music.

It actually puzzles me that for a lot of guitar players, the test of whether they like a particular bit of music or not is whether it has guitar in it and whether they think the playing/tone etc is good.

If you think there's no way of hearing Johnny B. Goode without Chuck Berry's signature guitar licks, try Peter Tosh's brilliant reggae version . One of the greatest covers ever in my opinion - and it *does* have some great guitar playing in it, in a totally different style.

I don't think I could ever do that. Sure, I can appreciate a nice tone and good playing, but it's not a deal-breaker for me. I like to music for the songs as a whole, and more often than not I focus on the vocals more than anything!

Reminds me of some years ago when I was in a band that played a version that interpolated In The Mood as a middle eight, going through four up-a-minor-third key changes and back to the original key...

Still prefer Tosh's version though. In fact, I think I prefer it to the original!
