Edited for accuracy . There have always been ugly male singers .

Actually even that isn't quite true - Janis Joplin was derided for her appearance.

For what it's worth I think Susan Boyle was picked on purpose *because* of her looks, not in spite of them.

As all the singers on X Factor/ Got Talent are screened well in advance of them getting before the celeb judges it was of no surprise to them she could actually sing, just part of the ridiculous sham.

Adele - Skyfall : yes, very Bond, clear musical references there but I'm now on my second play through and it is pretty pants. I would quite like to like Adele as plenty of people seem to derive great pleasure from what she does ( and her not having a more typical pop star image seems to be a good thing) and I think maybe I'm missing out but then I listen to stuff like this - cockney karaoke singing a song written over a brief pub lunch.
Breeding mammals with insects is my personal bugbear.

The thing that bugs me is that she really isn't especially fat or ugly. It would probably be fair to describe her as "a bit overweight" and though you wouldn't call her beautiful she has quite pleasant features.

If you didn't know her and she'd gone to your school, or worked in your office I doubt she would have raised an eyebrow, but if you check sickipedia you won't find a week goes by that doesn't feature a front page joke about her being fat, or ugly.

Bonamassa is not exactly an oil painting and has been a bit porky in his time, but no one would bother to even mention it.

+1. Not sure why people need to mention weight at all. She is heavily pregnant at the moment as well.

Not heard the song but she is dreadfully common. What happened to the good old days where people weren't allowed to be famous unless they were at least middle class and well spoken? It's an outrage. I may have to summon a constable.

I thought musically that was quite a good tune - a decent enough Bond theme. But, Adele is poor on it! Very weak performance. Lots of people rave about her vocals, and to be honest, I've never really understood it. This tune does nothing to change my mind!

I dont give a monkeys about words so never really listened whether they were good. The only weak thing IMO is the vocals (including backing vocals).

Did someone miss the irony in the statement I'd made?

Damn! I must work harder on irony and sarcasm.

There have always been fatties and mingers singing etc, but the media of the day seem to think it's amazing and news worthy.

It's partly the fault of Autotune and Record Labels. A pretty band will sell more records than an ugly one, so get a group of fit girls and a ginger one and you autotune the hell out of them so they sound ok, get some good music videos and dance routines and tour the world! Rinse and repeat until the only people making any money are all beautiful (or token gingers) and as the press have a collective memmory of a nano-second they forget there were ugly people before.... leave to simmer for a couple of years and they get blown away by a fatty singer.

Adele to my ear is no more talented than say Paloma Faith or Amy Winehouse was - possibly slightly less so. But the press latched onto her so they could either say "wow, even fat womens with a big flat face can sing! It's amazing" or "See, even less-than-beautiful women have talent, we spotted this before any of you judgemental types so we're better than you!" No one in the media seemed to say "well, I suppose she's an alright singer, but the songs do nothing for me" or "good voice, I suppose" ALL of the press when she started seemed to be talking of the talent:blubber ratio. Just like ALL of the press were amazed Susan Boyle had a talent - even Chris Moyles said he was surprised she had such a beautiful voice... that's Chris Moyles saying he was surprised an ugly person could sing. Chris Moyles, whos face looks like a bulldog's arsehole only less appealing.

And it annoys me because the people who work in media get to see the beautiul people BEFORE the airbrushing or make up, they know the truth that lays beneath, and still we're sold this venal, every-one-must-be-a-model-or-is-fundamentally-worthless image of the world, or the liberal press who use the same images on screen or in print but deride how terrible it is while still promoting and profiting for it
Hmm, I've woken up ranty... perhaps I should go back to bed
