He didn't appear to break at any point.
Trying to see the blue sky, above the rain.

I think when he went off-road he thought he could keep going and rejoin the course .. that was until the pylon got in the way .. I bet the insurance bill was high ..

I agree it does look odd, but it happened in Saturday's Rally of France Alsace - the driver, Petter Solberg from Norway, lost second place and a podium finish as he was forced to retire.

What a dick! Are they rows of grape vines he was driving through?

If they were, he was very lucky. My in-laws vines have taught metal wire at about 1 and 3 feet high. He wouldn't have made it through five rows of that with his head still on.
    Winner winner, chicken dinner.

There was wire - watch the sparks from the pole when it lands in the vines ... from today's Telegraph:

Solberg reckoned there was nothing wrong with the Ford and that he kept his foot down on the throttle so that his car would make it through the dense foliage of the vineyards. The electricity was a bit of a shock, though, in more than one sense."I couldn't see very well because of the leaves and foliage all over the windscreen. I didn't know we were across the road. I was expecting to see a much more wide-open area when we went over [the road]. And then we went straight to the pole,” he said. “"I don't know exactly what happened."
